Протокол передачи сообщений, применяемый в сетях на базе стека протоколов TCP/IP. Называется простым, т.к. поддерживает режим передачи 7-битовых слов и только в каналах с немедленной отправкой сообщений, в которых получатель постоянно готов к получению почты. Чтобы обеспечить режим побайтовой передачи с помощью протокола SMTP, необходимо предварительно осуществить преобразование 8-разрядных слов в 7-разрядные. Процедуры передачи сообщений по протоколу SMTP, а также формат и заголовки пакетов определены в документах RFC 821.822.
